With 16,000 plus Spring Chinook and 5,500 plus Summer Steelhead now past the Willamette Falls Counting Station, we can expect more new arrivals daily through June, July and beyond. These fish will provide some fun local summer sport as we have 3 different major tributaries to the Main Willamette River in close driving distance to the the Eugene-Springfield area of the southern Willamettte Valley. ROARING FORK GUIDE SERVICE NEWSLETTER – SPRING-SUMMER 2013
Spring Greetings 2013 Newsletter John Gross – Roaring Fork Guide Service – 2013 Newsletter As a relatively mild winter melts into spring, it‘s time to start formulating plans for outdoor adventures including spring & summer fishing. I just took a peak at the early numbers for Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook observed migrating over the Falls at Oregon City on the main Willamette River. Though I’m not a huge fan of relying strictly on statistics, we certainly can identify patterns and utilize the numbers as a useful tool in planning where and when to commit specific angling efforts. Winter Steelhead Fishing Will Continue through March and Even April on Certain River Systems

Winter Steelhead Showing Nicely Throughout Western Oregon
Reports of decent steelhead fishing surfaced up and down the coast in early January. As the early rains of 2013 diminished and gave way to a short cold snap, the bite layed down a tad. Recent rains over the last few days should now provide a welcome jump start and packs of new fish should be pushing through soon.

Dylan and his older brother Wyatt are quickly becoming seasoned salmon and steelhead fishermen. With Spring Chinook, Summer Steelhead, and Elk River Fall Chinook already notched under their belts, a Chrome Winter Steelhead sure helps round out the resume’. Next Stop – Sturgeon City.

A True Fish Tale (if there is such a thing)
Day #1 on the Siletz River we hit several big Chinook. Unfortunately, the brightest of the batch broke off before getting to the net and disappeared along with the plug. Day #2 we were drifting down river when I spot a plug floating down river about 30 feet away. I row over to the plug and as lift it out of the water I see it is connected to the jaw of a fish that was apparently eaten by a seal. The seal obviously lacked a taste for sharp hooks and hard plastic. Upon closer inspection, I recognized the remaing […]
