2023 Happy New Year from: Elk and Sixes Rivers
Finally adding a website post after a long hiatus. The last 2 years have been really tough for me physically and medically with numerous surgeries and recoveries. Too many procedures and hospitalizations to post a comprehensive story, but suffice to say, that recent surgeries ran the gamut, including a torn Achilles repair, a knee replacement, a rotator cuff repair, a knee debrievement, broken ribs, 2 lower back surgeries, cataract surgeries and more. Late Fall/Winter Chinook in the Elk and Sixes Rivers – Better Late Than Never
Elk – Sixes 2019 Season We spent more time waiting for rains, fish and the lifting of lower river closures than we did actually fishing for our late-run Fall/Winter Chinook on the Elk and Sixes Rivers. A squirt of rain arrived and ODFW finally lifted the lower river closures on Saturday, December 7. This would at least allow for a 3 week long Chinook fishery on the Sixes River which always closes to Chinook fishing on December 31. As we bid farewell to 2018, we’d like to wish everyone a Healthy and Peaceful New Year. May your fishing exploits involve some great new adventures this year. Here are a few photos from our late season salmon trips on the Elk and Sixes Rivers down on Oregon’s south coast. Both rivers continued to produce some very bright specimens that tested both skill & tackle. Some of our salmon catch even started behaving like their steelhead brethren, sporting acrobatic jumps and somersaults. A super fun way to finish off the salmon season. Late Season Rains Bring in Fresh Chinook Salmon on the Elk River and the Sixes Rivers near Port Orford, Oregon
Though Elk River and Sixes River Fall-Winter Chinook have shown up late this season due to low rainfall, they are now providing great sport for diligent fishermen. For the better part of the last 2 weeks we have finally had enough rainfall in the Port Orford area and in the upper river drainages to pull in fish and even enough water to float drift boats. Though water levels are nowhere near “bank to bank,” there is enough water to chase after the big feisty “Hawgs” for which the Elk & Sixes are famous. Photos below depict some of the action […]
Some Great Trout & Steelhead Options while Waiting For Fall Chinook
While we patiently wait for sufficient rainfall to raise our coastal streams enough to pull salmon into the free-flowing waters above the tide, we are still able to have some decent trout & steehead action on numerous inland rivers. While out visiting Oregon to attend a wedding, Ohio residents John & Marybeth got a taste of this fun while chasing after steelhead and fly fishing for trout on a recent river drift. Wishing You All a Very Happy & Peaceful New Year in 2018! We finished off the 2017 Chinook Season down on Elk – Sixes with some beautiful bright Hawgs. Already looking forward to next season. ODFW is forecasting a better 2018 Springer Season on the Willamette System so we eagerly await better Spring Chinook numbers for our up-coming McKenzie Season. The fish often show in catchable numbers by late May…….Fingers Crossed!
Betty Opened up a Big Can of Mojo in Pursuit of Elk River Kings
At the start of the trip, Betty wasn’t 100% sure about the whole fishing thing. However, after landing a nice Elk River hatchery hen, she was definitely sold on the whole gig. She did a nice job handling the feisty Elk Chinook. Michael was certainly tickled to share in Betty’s joy.
Kathy was pretty excited with her early morning Elk River catch
Though a fly fishing addict at heart, Kathy acquiesced to running a plug, and was rewarded handsomely! As the fish ripped off 150 feet of line in no time, I think she sensed some panic in my demeanor. It was definitely a tug of war, but Kathy definitely settled down and patiently worked and worked and worked the King back to the gravel bar & boat and ultimately to the net. I know she considered handing the rod off several times during the battle, but Tom & I encouraged her to continue and we were all glad she did. These […]
Elk-Sixes Fishing in Full Swing
The Elk and Sixes River Salmon Fishing is currently in Full Swing. This is a weather-driven fishery so timing can be very important. With each rain, new fish come in on the tides providing new action to anxious fishermen. This late run of Fall-Winter Chinook can last all the way through December. Each year, chrome bright tackle-testing, fat Hawgs in the 30-40 lb range become part of the catch to fortunate anglers.
