2018 McKenzie River Candlelight Kids Trout Trip – Another Success!

by admin
The 2018 McKenzie River Candlelight Kids Event Last Thursday Provided Fun for All. This annual event, hosted by a variety of local businesses and organizations, has gradually morphed into quite a special day for participants, promoters and organizers. Kids surviving or battling cancer, college athletes, and event volunteers all enjoy this day equally. The Northwest Steelheaders put on a scrumptious pancake and egg breakfast at the launch site and then a Hamburger lunch/dinner at the take-out. Local guides and boatcaptains give a day of fishing to the participants as they enjoy a river drift from Deerhorn Park near Holden Creek […]

The three generation Elkins Clan can testify that Late Season Spring Chinook are still available in the local catch in the southern Willamette Valley Rivers.  Granpa Wes, son Wes Jr., and grandson Taylor all enjoyed reeling in some fun fighting fish during their multi-day fishing adventure.  It’s always fun to have some fishing stories to take home along with a cooler full of succulent Springer filets!  While Wes & Wes put in a tad more effort targeting the big fish, just like last year, young Taylor put on his usual clinic catching feisty Rainbow Trout.

The wedding party we guided on the McKenzie last Friday decided to become one with river.  Indeed the young men found that a quick afternoon dip can be both refreshing and exhilarating.  We found it only appropriate that Ben the groom was the first to take the plunge!  Famous for its clear cold water, the pool and drop character of the upper McKenzie is nothing short of pure “eye candy,”

In these years of lower fish numbers, we are pleased to report that Spring Chinook & Summer Steelhead continue to show on the Middle Fork Willamette & McKenzie rivers.  Jason, out visiting from Chicago, was delighted to tag out on Springers during his early July float on Tuesday morning.  While we tied into a total of 5 salmon, only 2 ended up in the fish box.  Regardless, the trip was certainly enjoyable, exciting and productive.

Our very scenic Upper McKenzie Trout Trips are producing some really nice fish.  The fish are always a great bonus on these extremely beautiful upper river drifts.  The drift boat is the vessel of choice as it handles very well as we pick our way through the riffles and rapids which characterize the Upper McKenzie.  Many folks choose fly fishing as their preferred method of targeting the trout, but we can certainly adapt to other gear including spinners or micro plugs.  Fly fishing novices are often surprised however, by their success with the flies. Deer and Bald Eagles are among […]

Our 2018 McKenzie River Spring Chinook Fishing is now well underway.  I apologize for the recent lack of posts, but a 6 month recovery period from knee surgery has had me off the oars.  The good news is that I’m back on the water and more than ready to Rock’n Roll.  With the July 4th Holiday now at our doorstep, it’s time to turn the page and move on to a new chapter.  Both Springers and Summer Steelhead continue to pour over the Willamette Falls fish counting station, many of which are destined for the McKenzie River & the Middle […]
