Guests are enjoying great fun on our McKenzie River summer trout trips.  Beginners to experts alike are all finding fishing success while experiencing the natural beauty of the river.  Parts of the trip are pleasantly restful as we meander through the softer and scenic bends of the river.  There are other stretches where the elevation drop is greater, creating some exciting whitewater as we pick our way through the boulder runs.  These areas demand greater attention for the oarsman and a true appreciation for the design and durability of the classic McKenzie River Drift boats we use which are built […]

Summer Greetings from Roaring Fork Guide Service

Howdy Folks –       A Thousand apologies for my lack of presence on social media this year, but truth be told, it has been a weird year both personally and professionally. Personally, I had two unplanned visits to the hospital, both resulting in surgeries. I underwent a torn rotator cuff repair in January and then yet another knee surgery in June. Good news is, both appear to be  successful though I am still recovering from the knee operation. As you might expect, the surgeries and recovery periods have impacted my guiding operation, but so has Covid-19. The State shut […]

2019 Summer Newsletter from Roaring Fork Guide Service Greetings Friends & Fishermen- With record snowfall in Oregon, and then dozens, if not hundreds of sites in the Midwest ravaged by devastating tornadoes, all one can say is “indeed what a weird year it’s been.” Hopefully many western states got sufficient snow-pack to fill reservoirs and meet our ever-expanding water needs. Heath issues here on the home front in 2018 proved equally challenging with 2 failed surgeries to re-connect a torn right quadriceps tendon off the right knee. The second hospital visit involved several days of clean-up to remove a contaminated […]

The three generation Elkins Clan can testify that Late Season Spring Chinook are still available in the local catch in the southern Willamette Valley Rivers.  Granpa Wes, son Wes Jr., and grandson Taylor all enjoyed reeling in some fun fighting fish during their multi-day fishing adventure.  It’s always fun to have some fishing stories to take home along with a cooler full of succulent Springer filets!  While Wes & Wes put in a tad more effort targeting the big fish, just like last year, young Taylor put on his usual clinic catching feisty Rainbow Trout.

In these years of lower fish numbers, we are pleased to report that Spring Chinook & Summer Steelhead continue to show on the Middle Fork Willamette & McKenzie rivers.  Jason, out visiting from Chicago, was delighted to tag out on Springers during his early July float on Tuesday morning.  While we tied into a total of 5 salmon, only 2 ended up in the fish box.  Regardless, the trip was certainly enjoyable, exciting and productive.

Our 2018 McKenzie River Spring Chinook Fishing is now well underway.  I apologize for the recent lack of posts, but a 6 month recovery period from knee surgery has had me off the oars.  The good news is that I’m back on the water and more than ready to Rock’n Roll.  With the July 4th Holiday now at our doorstep, it’s time to turn the page and move on to a new chapter.  Both Springers and Summer Steelhead continue to pour over the Willamette Falls fish counting station, many of which are destined for the McKenzie River & the Middle […]

John Gross – Roaring Fork Guide Service – 2018 Newsletter Dear Friends & Fishing Enthusiasts, As I sit here at my home office looking out to the yard on yet another cool, wet and gray day, my spirits are brightened by color-rich Rhododendrons, industrious Tree Swallows working their boxes, and fruit trees in full bloom. These are all good indicators that Spring has finally arrived and while I might welcome warmer temperatures and more sunshine, I do recognize that the seemingly constant soft rains are a good thing as they translate to better snow-pack in the mountains and consequent desirable […]

Saying Goodbye to our 2017 McKenzie River Salmon Season. Our final September salmon journey down the McKenzie this past week proved fun and surprisingly productive.  We actually brought 3 hatchery salmon to the net on Thursday, September 7, including a double header on a last minute half-day effort.  When I got the call, I was initially pretty skeptical about our prospects given the late date and the fact that I had pretty much already packed it in for our McKenzie River Spring-Summer Chinook Season.  I guess since I was available and I had noticed a forecast for possible showers, I […]

Wes Connected with Numerous Late-Run Spring Chinook Over the past 10 days we have had great luck finding some quality Spring Chinook, mostly of  hatchery origin.  To our delight, all the fish retained had nice orange meat.  Back-bouncing baits, running baits behind divers, and even plugs all produced strikes.  Wes spent 2 days of his vacation successfully chasing after big fish and then also did a day of fly fishing for Rainbow Trout on the very scenic upper McKenzie River with his son Wes Jr. and grandson Taylor also joining in on the fun.  It was great to watch all three […]
