Fall Salmon Fishing is in Full Swing on Oregon’s Coastal Rivers

It’s that time of year when Fall Chinook and Coho are on the docket up and down the Oregon Coast. As the salmon stage in the estuaries in preparation for their upriver migration, it’s often a trolling game. As rain arrives and river levels climb dramatically, focus often changes to the free flowing waters well upriver of the tidal influence. Suddenly the drift boat becomes the craft of choice as fishermen row their way from salmon hole to salmon hole. As fish sense proximity to their natal spawning grounds, the bite can be ferocious with unnerving urgency and focused […]

Lots of choices when it comes to Fall Fishing

Last week I had the priviledge of introducing a couple guys from out-of-town to the McKenzie River. They were looking for a couple days of mostly fly fishing and got to see quite a bit of river as we did about 10 miles each day. Day 1 we fished the upper river and gave the guys a few good rides through some white water with a chance to enjoy the scenic majesty along the river. Fall is a wonderful time of year with perfect temperatures and great color emerging in the riparian vegetation as Big Leaf Maples show in […]

On Day 1 of Frank & Tinas’s McKenzie River Drifts, we headed to the Upper McKenzie to enjoy the scenery as we picked our way through the rapids in search of Rainbows. The fish cooperated and we even found a few chunker Bows among the many willing participants.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Fishermen, Browsers and Viewers- Allow me a moment to wish you all a New Year filled with shared joy, adventure, great health and abundance …….. and perhaps a limit or two somewhere along the way. Our recent trip down the Main Umpqua River certainly substantiated all stories that the Lower Umpqua is loaded with cooperative chrome bright winter steelhead. While fish were being taken on a variety of methods, side drifting yarnballs certainly appeared among the most productive ways to tangle with chrome. We did observe one group of anglers holding a very popular slot enjoying repeated hook-ups […]

Elk & Sixes Rivers Continue to Produce after each New Splash of Rain

The rain which pulls our salmon from the Pacific Ocean into their natal streams has been all too absent this fall season. With only 3 short intervals of rain this fall, bumper fishing days have been in short supply on the smaller coastal streams in southwest Oregon in 2013. Folks with enough savvy or good fortune to time their fishing soon after a good rain often reap chrome rewards. Since an inch or two of rain may only result in a couple days of good fishing, timing becomes everything. Sustained wet weather that keeps the river level up with […]
