Spring Chinook and Summer Steelhead now Showing on the McKenzie River

Doug was quite happy to land this large Spring Chinook salmon caught yesterday on his trip with RFGS. This hatchery fish tested both gear & skill and will provide an unmitigated delicacy for the barbeque. As he put it, “at the current cost of non-farmed salmon, the filets off this beast are worth several hundred dollars.” Trout fishing on the McKenzie remains very productive and both salmon and steelhead are currently available on the Middle Fork Willamette and on the South Santiam as well. While the wild Spring Chinook run remains viable on the McKenzie River, recent misguided efforts […]

Roaring Fork Guide Service – Newsletter Spring-Summer 2014 Dear Friends, Anglers and Recreationists Yes it’s that time of year again when thoughts change to shorts, barbeques, and outdoor fun. As a river/fishing guide, this is my busiest time of year and also a special time of year when I get to focus my efforts on my home river, the McKenzie. Though I do run trips elsewhere locally on the Middle Fork Willamette, South Santiam and Umpqua, certainly the McKenzie gets preferential treatment since it flows just past my backyard. These rivers all provide ample opportunity to tie into a […]

Julie put on quite a fishing clinic for Cecil & myself on Thursday’s McKenzie drift. She was very busy hooking Steelhead, landing Steelhead, losing Steelhead, getting bait bites, etc… For her Grand Finale, she landed her first “back-bounced” salmon! Cecil and I could only look on with pride as she mastered yet another technique…….I fear we may have created a monster.

Friend Russ Matthews with a healthy, hard-fighting “Springer” he landed on our trip this past thursday. With 16,000 plus Spring Chinook and 5,500 plus Summer Steelhead now past the Willamette Falls Counting Station, we can expect more new arrivals daily through June, July and beyond. These fish will provide some fun local summer sport as we have 3 different major tributaries to the Main Willamette River in close driving distance to the the Eugene-Springfield area of the southern Willamettte Valley. The McKenzie River, the South Santiam and the Middle Fork Willamette all sport runs of Summer Steelhead & Spring […]

Spring Greetings 2013 Newsletter John Gross – Roaring Fork Guide Service – 2013 Newsletter As a relatively mild winter melts into spring, it‘s time to start formulating plans for outdoor adventures including spring & summer fishing. I just took a peak at the early numbers for Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook observed migrating over the Falls at Oregon City on the main Willamette River. Though I’m not a huge fan of relying strictly on statistics, we certainly can identify patterns and utilize the numbers as a useful tool in planning where and when to commit specific angling efforts. It […]

Dave and Lee were quite happy to enjoy some peace and solitude on their recent float from Dexter Dam down to Clearwater on the Willamette River. A few interuptions along the float due to some salmon and steelhead action seemed a welcome departure from the peace and quiet.

Dave McBee was delighted to tie into a feisty Summer-Run Steelhead on a recent Middle Fork Willamette drift. In the heat of the afternoon, when prospects looked tough, Dave tossed his spinner into a small pocket of shade and was pleasantly rewarded with a hard-fighting, tail-walking, bright Summer-Run. Should we mention that his wife Lee had already hooked a big steelhead and a surprise salmon earlier in the morning?
