Guests are enjoying Great Fun on our McKenzie River Summer Trout Trips
Guests are enjoying great fun on our McKenzie River summer trout trips. Beginners to experts alike are all finding fishing success while experiencing the natural beauty of the river. Parts of the trip are pleasantly restful as we meander through the softer and scenic bends of the river. There are other stretches where the elevation drop is greater, creating some exciting whitewater as we pick our way through the boulder runs. These areas demand greater attention for the oarsman and a true appreciation for the design and durability of the classic McKenzie River Drift boats we use which are built […]
5000 plus newly planted Rainbow Trout in the McKenzie River
On Thursday, my friend Garry & I volunteered to run the planter raft to release hatchery-reared Rainbow Trout in the McKenzie River. We released over 5000 fish from the big, gray monster, a pontoon raft with a large stainless steel basin for fish sandwiched between the large floats. We picked up our loads of trout at 3 different locations and scatter planted fish as we worked our way down river. I ran the oars while Garry released fish with a dip net. With the heavy current and high water level on fish planting day, running the raft was more than a chore. The […]
Elk River and Sixes River Fall-Winter Chinook Show up Late
Elk River and Sixes River Fall-Winter Chinook show up late but are providing great sport for diligent fishermen. For the better part of the last 2 weeks we have finally had enough rainfall in the Port Orford area and in the upper river drainages to pull in fish and even enough water to float drift boats. Though water levels are nowhere near “bank to bank,” there is enough water to chase after the big feisty “Hawgs” for which the Elk& Sixes are famous.
McKenzie River Trout Fly Fishing
Tuesday’s upper McKenzie River Trout Fly Fishing drift boat trip certainly proved fun & fruitful and certainly substantiated that McKenzie River trout fly action remains excellent and in fact fast & furious. As we pulled into the very first riffle just to demonstrate a new fly technique and the corresponding fly set-up, it was “Fish On!” instantly. As the day progressed, action would continue to heat up and just get better and better. My guests “Chill” Wills and his buddy Ricky were a total hoot constantly ribbing on one another as they had me in stitches the entire day. While […]
Everyone had a fantastic time on our recent McKenzie River Trout trip
Enjoy the following photos & comments from a recent McKenzie River Trout Trip. Kind words from our guests: John, Thanks for the pictures. Everyone had a fantastic time. I appreciate you putting this trip together for us. Hope it’s cooler out there now! Take care, Mike Michael Pope (Note: This was a fun company sponsored group trip fishing for McKenzie River Trout. Run in early August, 2017, the trip involved 9 guided boats, 18 guests, and a shore Fish Fry. The fishing was surprisingly good in spite of record temperatures and truly a great time was had by all. Group […]
Middle Fork Willamette River & McKenzie River still Producing Late-Arriving Spring Chinook
Wes Connected with Numerous Late-Run Spring Chinook Over the past 10 days we have had great luck finding some quality Spring Chinook, mostly of hatchery origin. To our delight, all the fish retained had nice orange meat. Back-bouncing baits, running baits behind divers, and even plugs all produced strikes. Wes spent 2 days of his vacation successfully chasing after big fish and then also did a day of fly fishing for Rainbow Trout on the very scenic upper McKenzie River with his son Wes Jr. and grandson Taylor also joining in on the fun. It was great to watch all three […]
We Enjoyed a Very Scenic Upper McKenzie River Trout Fishing Float
Tim & Connie were down visiting from Port Angeles, Washington on Monday and enjoyed a long and scenic upper McKenzie River trout fishing float. Though hardly fly fishing experts, with attention and determination both landed plenty of scrappy McKenzie Rainbows, all on flies. We used both wet and dry flies and found success on both. We covered almost 11 river miles and found cooperative fish throughout the riffles, runs and pools separated by occasional larger rapids that occurred in areas of higher gradient and which characterize the upper river. The McKenzie River Drift Boat actually evolved on the McKenzie River. […]
2016 SPRING-SUMMER NEWSLETTER FROM ROARING FORK GUIDE SERVICE
John Gross – Roaring Fork Guide Service – Newsletter – Spring/Summer – 2016 Spring Greetings Folks- Yes it’s that time of year again when we recap the past season’s highlights and look ahead to the 2016 fishing season. While we fishermen prefer to avoid the dreaded ”D” word, fact is, drought conditions have presented numerous challenges over the past four summer seasons, especially in the late summer months. We all know salmon, trout and steelhead thrive in water which is cool, clean and plentiful. Low river levels with warm algae-laden water has hardly been the ideal fishing scenario. Fortunately, […]
