Spring Chinook – Summer Steelhead – Trout Now Showing on the McKenzie River & Middle Fork Willamette
Gary was happy to land a feisty Summer Steelhead & a fresh Spring Chinook on Tuesday’s trip down the McKenzie River. Action should continue to heat up in the weeks to come through June & July. On yesterday’s trout trip we landed 21 Rainbows on about 35 takes on wets & dries. Great trout fishing should also continue through the summer.
Hot Trout Action on McKenzie Opener – Leads to a Delicious Fish Fry
Our Short Half-Day effort proved very successful on the McKenzie River Opener for planter trout. This is a very fun option available to us throughout the summer season. All our fish were caught on flies, so this is a great way to learn and practice fly fishing. Success like this can be a great introduction for novices and certainly helps to keep the attention span of youngsters. It’s just a real fun way to enjoy the river.
Western Oregon Coastal Lakes are Producing some Great Catches of Beefy-Sized Rainbow Trout
As we wait for Spring Chinook to arrive in better numbers on the big coastal systems including the Rogue & Umpqua Rivers, it’s fun to fill the time & coolers with a mess of chunky hatchery trout that ODFW has released in a variety of scenic lakes. The migration of Springers over Willamette Falls into the Upper Willamette System has been slow due to cool water temperatures and heavy river flow rates. This could all change drastically very soon as prevailing weather patterns trend toward milder temperatures and lower rainfall. Fish counts at Willamette Falls may be surprisingly different […]
McKenzie River Continues to Provide Great Trout Fishing
John & Anthony had an excellent day of trout fishing enjoying many hook-ups on the fly rods. Easily landing 20 or more fish, they may have even become fly-fishing converts! The scenic beauty of the Upper McKenzie River is always a huge bonus.
Cancer Survivor Kids Enjoy a Fishing Drift Down the McKenzie River
Had the opportunity last Thursday to contribute a donated trip to this very rewarding, now annual event in which cancer survivor kids from Doernbecker’s Hospital are given a day of fishing down the McKenzie River. The event is spearheaded by the McKenzie Guides and our local Northwest Steeleader chapter and supported by numerous other contributors, businesses etc as well as some Duck and Beaver athletes .. In addition to the fishing, the group is treated to a pre-trip breakfast and then concludes with an afternoon BBQ at the takeout park. Certainly a good time for all. A Hearty thanks […]
Excellent Rainbow Trout Fishing on Oregon’s most scenic McKenzie River
Todd & Jerry were very impressed with the quality and quantity of Rainbow Trout landed on flies during their recent McKenzie River drift boat adventure. They came to realize that even first-time fly fishermen can enjoy tremendous success when placed on good fish-holding water along with a few tips from the guide.
McKenzie River Spring Chinook Action Enduring well into June
In addition to our local salmon trips, as the summer progresses we have some really fun fishing alternatives for Bass and Trout. The trout trips offer a great opportunity for novice fly-fishers to gain the confidence that flies really do work! It is not uncommon for a first-timer to hook as many as 30 fish of which he or she might land 15-20. It’s great fun!
McKenzie River Spring Chinook Still Awarding Anglers
With over 40,000 Springers in the Upper Willamette System, our local salmon fishing should peak through the month of June and hopefully endure beyond. A glimpse of what can happen when you bring a can of magic MOJO!
Spring Chinook Arriving in Good Numbers to Willamette System Tributaries – McKenzie, Middle Fork Wilamette, & South Santiam
RFGS Newsletter – Spring/Summer – 2015 Dear Friends, Fishermen & Guests, I greet you with exciting news. Hard fighting Spring Chinook salmon are currently arriving in really decent numbers in the major tributaries to the Willamette River. With a low snow pack in the mountains, a mild spring, and below average rainfall, the Springers have migrated way earlier than usual this season and are posting some pretty impressive numbers. Nature never ceases to amaze me. It seems the fish instinctively know that they need to make their move upriver early this year while river levels and water temperatures are […]
