Exciting Fall Chinook Fishing Peaks on Numerous Systems
Ed and Cliff had quite a day recently while drifting the very scenic Siletz River. Both bait and plugs seemed to produced equally well. The intermittent downpours didn’t phase the boys at all and in fact, Cliff maintained that his stylish pink rainpants somehow influenced their great success.
Nice Fish! (Just hope it’s not bigger than mine)
As Matt congratulates his brother Thomas on an excellent catch, there could just possibly be a touch of unspoken concern that Thomas’ fish may outweigh Matt’s beauty by a pound or two. In the end however, all was good as the boys went 4 for 5 on Chinook while enjoying some late afternoon fall sunshine on Wednesday’s drift down the Siuslaw.
Fall Chinook Fishing is in Full Swing!
Recent Rains busted our Fall Chinook Fishery wide open. The great tidal fishing that has been enjoyed now for a month or two on many of our coastal estuaries, has spilled over into the free flowing rivers above the tidal influence thanks to last week’s wet and wild deluge. The same rains that set precipitation records for September in many locations, pushed fall salmon into the upper rivers. As the flood waters drop and clear, fishermen have the luxery of chosing to either fish up high for fast moving migrating salmon or to continue fishing the estuaries as new […]

A Heavy Rain Brings in Some McKenzie Biters
Julie & Cecil Moore had quite a day on the McKenzie River Chasing after Spring Chinook Salmonon Tuesday June 25th. Landing 3 Springers was enough of a diversion in order to tollerate a rediculous summer downpour. It truly felt like over 2 inches of rain fell during the trip as many buckets of water were bailed in order to lighten the rowing load. At times the rain slammed down so hard you had to drop your head or close your eyes. Still, the rain definitely pulled in new fish and put them in a cooperative spirit. Most of our action […]
McKenzie Steelhead & Salmon can really get the Adreniline Flowing
Julie put on quite a fishing clinic for Cecil & myself on Thursday’s McKenzie drift. She was very busy hooking Steelhead, landing Steelhead, losing Steelhead, getting bait bites, etc… For her Grand Finale, she landed her first “back-bounced” salmon! Cecil and I could only look on with pride as she mastered yet another technique…….I fear we may have created a monster.
Spring Chinook & Summer Steelhead now Arriving on Upper Willamette Tributaries- McKenzie – Willamette Middle Fork – Santiam
Friend Russ Matthews with a healthy, hard-fighting “Springer” he landed on our trip this past thursday. With 16,000 plus Spring Chinook and 5,500 plus Summer Steelhead now past the Willamette Falls Counting Station, we can expect more new arrivals daily through June, July and beyond. These fish will provide some fun local summer sport as we have 3 different major tributaries to the Main Willamette River in close driving distance to the the Eugene-Springfield area of the southern Willamettte Valley. The McKenzie River, the South Santiam and the Middle Fork Willamette all sport runs of Summer Steelhead & Spring […]
ROARING FORK GUIDE SERVICE NEWSLETTER – SPRING-SUMMER 2013
Spring Greetings 2013 Newsletter John Gross – Roaring Fork Guide Service – 2013 Newsletter As a relatively mild winter melts into spring, it‘s time to start formulating plans for outdoor adventures including spring & summer fishing. I just took a peak at the early numbers for Summer Steelhead and Spring Chinook observed migrating over the Falls at Oregon City on the main Willamette River. Though I’m not a huge fan of relying strictly on statistics, we certainly can identify patterns and utilize the numbers as a useful tool in planning where and when to commit specific angling efforts. It […]
Persistence Pays Off
The Fall-Winter Chinook Season on the Elk & Sixes Rivers required patience and diligence. Plagued by seemingly continuous high water and “blown out” conditions, those who stuck it out, eventually scored Silver.
Elk – Sixes Feast or Famine
When our river finally dropped into fishable shape, the fish responded nicely. The problem was, too much water most of our late Fall Season.
