Guests are enjoying Great Fun on our McKenzie River Summer Trout Trips
Guests are enjoying great fun on our McKenzie River summer trout trips. Beginners to experts alike are all finding fishing success while experiencing the natural beauty of the river. Parts of the trip are pleasantly restful as we meander through the softer and scenic bends of the river. There are other stretches where the elevation drop is greater, creating some exciting whitewater as we pick our way through the boulder runs. These areas demand greater attention for the oarsman and a true appreciation for the design and durability of the classic McKenzie River Drift boats we use which are built […]
Fall Chinook have Arrived in Oregon’s Coastal Estuaries
Amid all the Covid-19 concern, we finally decided to take our very first test foray this past week to check out some coastal Fall Chinook fishing. Because afternoon winds have recently prevailed, we recognized we might be just dabbling in morning estuary waters before being blown off the water. This ended up the case indeed. Still, even just a few hours on the salt seemed worth the effort, fish or no fish. As luck would have it, our first Fall Chinook trip of 2020 proved both fun and productive. On our way out from the launch ramp, we dropped a […]
Late Fall/Winter Chinook in the Elk and Sixes Rivers – Better Late Than Never
Elk – Sixes 2019 Season We spent more time waiting for rains, fish and the lifting of lower river closures than we did actually fishing for our late-run Fall/Winter Chinook on the Elk and Sixes Rivers. A squirt of rain arrived and ODFW finally lifted the lower river closures on Saturday, December 7. This would at least allow for a 3 week long Chinook fishery on the Sixes River which always closes to Chinook fishing on December 31. The rivers have unfortunately remained far lower than ideal since the lower river opening on December 7. Regardless, diligent anglers are picking […]
2019 Summer Newsletter – Roaring Fork Guide Service
2019 Summer Newsletter from Roaring Fork Guide Service Greetings Friends & Fishermen- With record snowfall in Oregon, and then dozens, if not hundreds of sites in the Midwest ravaged by devastating tornadoes, all one can say is “indeed what a weird year it’s been.” Hopefully many western states got sufficient snow-pack to fill reservoirs and meet our ever-expanding water needs. Heath issues here on the home front in 2018 proved equally challenging with 2 failed surgeries to re-connect a torn right quadriceps tendon off the right knee. The second hospital visit involved several days of clean-up to remove a contaminated […]
RFGS Wishes Everyone Great New Fishing Adventures in the New Year
As we bid farewell to 2018, we’d like to wish everyone a Healthy and Peaceful New Year. May your fishing exploits involve some great new adventures this year. Here are a few photos from our late season salmon trips on the Elk and Sixes Rivers down on Oregon’s south coast. Both rivers continued to produce some very bright specimens that tested both skill & tackle. Some of our salmon catch even started behaving like their steelhead brethren, sporting acrobatic jumps and somersaults. A super fun way to finish off the salmon season. Winter Steelhead will now get top billing on […]
Late Season Rains Bring in Fresh Chinook Salmon on the Elk River and the Sixes Rivers near Port Orford, Oregon
Though Elk River and Sixes River Fall-Winter Chinook have shown up late this season due to low rainfall, they are now providing great sport for diligent fishermen. For the better part of the last 2 weeks we have finally had enough rainfall in the Port Orford area and in the upper river drainages to pull in fish and even enough water to float drift boats. Though water levels are nowhere near “bank to bank,” there is enough water to chase after the big feisty “Hawgs” for which the Elk & Sixes are famous. Photos below depict some of the action […]
Some Great Trout & Steelhead Options while Waiting For Fall Chinook
While we patiently wait for sufficient rainfall to raise our coastal streams enough to pull salmon into the free-flowing waters above the tide, we are still able to have some decent trout & steehead action on numerous inland rivers. While out visiting Oregon to attend a wedding, Ohio residents John & Marybeth got a taste of this fun while chasing after steelhead and fly fishing for trout on a recent river drift. As well as landing a couple fine late-arriving Summer Steelhead, we got into some nice chunker Rainbow Trout that took to the fly. Meanwhile, the weather is definitely […]
Late Season Spring Chinook are still available in the Middle Fork Willamette & McKenzie Rivers near Eugene Oregon
The three generation Elkins Clan can testify that Late Season Spring Chinook are still available in the local catch in the southern Willamette Valley Rivers. Granpa Wes, son Wes Jr., and grandson Taylor all enjoyed reeling in some fun fighting fish during their multi-day fishing adventure. It’s always fun to have some fishing stories to take home along with a cooler full of succulent Springer filets! While Wes & Wes put in a tad more effort targeting the big fish, just like last year, young Taylor put on his usual clinic catching feisty Rainbow Trout.
A quick Afternoon Dip can be both Refreshing and Exhilarating!
The wedding party we guided on the McKenzie last Friday decided to become one with river. Indeed the young men found that a quick afternoon dip can be both refreshing and exhilarating. We found it only appropriate that Ben the groom was the first to take the plunge! Famous for its clear cold water, the pool and drop character of the upper McKenzie is nothing short of pure “eye candy,”
