Gorgeous Scenery & Good Trout Fishing on the Upper McKenzie River
Fishing Reunion This past Thursday & Friday I had the opportunity and privilege of coordinating a mini fishing reunion on the McKenzie River for a group of former freshmen dorm mates dating back forty some odd years since college. What a fun group! It was so interesting to marvel at the incredibly diverse paths taken by each person leading to their current career. Included was a surgeon, a commercial real estate executive, numerous engineers, and a corporate financial planner. Lunch near Eagle Rock On Day One, we tried for salmon on the lower river which proved a tough nut to […]
McKenzie River Salmon Continue to Provide Good Sport
Spring Chinook are Challenging for Sure (Yet Well Worth the Effort) Garry, my guest last Wednesday, was quite happy to hook into several challenging McKenzie River Salmon during our 5 mile long drift. Though the first fish that was hooked on a diver and bait set-up, unfortunately shook the hook, the next 2 fish hooked were not quite so fortunate. Not one to just throw in the towel, Garry got right back in the saddle and found several deep holes and back-bounced his way into 2 more Springers, perhaps destined for a 4th of July barbecue. Spring Chinook Salmon is regarded […]
McKenzie River Trout & Salmon Fishing Now in Full Swing
McKenzie River Trout & Salmon Fishing Improving daily! Jeff & his friend David enjoyed some excellent fly action resulting in 50+ fish to the boat, not to mention, some spectacular scenery during their McKenzie River trout fishing adventure last Saturday. In the left photo Jeff is playing a feisty McKenzie River Rainbow Trout in direct view of famed monolith “Eagle Rock” as his backdrop. The upper McKenzie includes some rapids with pocket water and stair steps. It has quite a bit more gradient than the lower river below Leaburg Dam. The pool and drop character of the upper river […]
Salmon Fishing Starting to Heat Up on the McKenzie River
My guest on Friday came up with a beautiful McKenzie Spring Chinook on a relaxing half-day effort. It was a great battle right out of the chute…… as the fish had no intention of cooperating. Succulent seared Springer on the barbie is hard to beat!
Had a Very Fun & Relaxing Day Lake Fishing for Trout near Eugene, Oregon
We have numerous local Lakes in the Eugene-Springfield area, all of which have good trout fishing. We can comfortably accommodate as many as 4 guests in the Jet Boat on these lake fishing trips. The close attention of my guests in preparing their rigs certainly paid off in fish! On some lakes we cast lures while on other lakes it’s a troll fishery. Some of the lakes are less than an hour drive from the Eugene -Springfield area. Among the local favorites are Dexter and Lookout Point Reservoir and also Fall Creek and Hills Creek Reservoir. Cottage Grove and Dorena […]
Roaring Fork Guide Service Spring-Summer Newsletter – 2017
John Gross – Roaring Fork Guide Service – 2017 Newsletter Spring Greetings Friends, I hope our Newsletter finds you in good health and demeanor. As the years roll on, it certainly seems that health matters become a greater concern and perhaps an all too increasingly regular topic of conversation. But enough chatter. The good news for 2017 is lots and lots of water in our rivers. Our Pacific Coast and much of the West for that matter, got smacked with major rainfall this past fall & winter, and rain continues as I write. Flooding as far south as Southern California […]
Great Action on the McKenzie River
We ran a quick late afternoon-evening float yesterday on the McKenzie River. It was a warm evening with a few bugs showing and the action was plentiful. Landing over 20 fish on a very short float made for an exciting drift. We caught a mix of hatchery fish that ranged from 8-14 inches as well as some deep-bodied, wide-shouldered wild chunkers that took the reels well into the backing. Both dries and nymphs produced equally well. What GREAT FUN! Here are some examples of the Rainbow Trout we typically encounter on the majestic McKenzie
McKenzie River Trout Fishing Starting Up
A mix of wild and hatchery-raised Rainbow Trout are now available on the McKenzie River. Both the upper and lower river are producing catches. McKenzie trout respond readily to flies which provide great fun for both novice and expert fly fishers.
