Spring Chinook and Summer Steelhead now Showing on the McKenzie River

Doug was quite happy to land this large Spring Chinook salmon caught yesterday on his trip with RFGS. This hatchery fish tested both gear & skill and will provide an unmitigated delicacy for the barbeque. As he put it, “at the current cost of non-farmed salmon, the filets off this beast are worth several hundred dollars.” Trout fishing on the McKenzie remains very productive and both salmon and steelhead are currently available on the Middle Fork Willamette and on the South Santiam as well. While the wild Spring Chinook run remains viable on the McKenzie River, recent misguided efforts […]

Good Friend & Guest J-LO was all smiles as he got into several Steelhead and a big Springer on our drift yesterday

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Fishermen, Browsers and Viewers- Allow me a moment to wish you all a New Year filled with shared joy, adventure, great health and abundance …….. and perhaps a limit or two somewhere along the way. Our recent trip down the Main Umpqua River certainly substantiated all stories that the Lower Umpqua is loaded with cooperative chrome bright winter steelhead. While fish were being taken on a variety of methods, side drifting yarnballs certainly appeared among the most productive ways to tangle with chrome. We did observe one group of anglers holding a very popular slot enjoying repeated hook-ups […]

Elk & Sixes Rivers Continue to Produce after each New Splash of Rain

The rain which pulls our salmon from the Pacific Ocean into their natal streams has been all too absent this fall season. With only 3 short intervals of rain this fall, bumper fishing days have been in short supply on the smaller coastal streams in southwest Oregon in 2013. Folks with enough savvy or good fortune to time their fishing soon after a good rain often reap chrome rewards. Since an inch or two of rain may only result in a couple days of good fishing, timing becomes everything. Sustained wet weather that keeps the river level up with […]

First pass of the morning and Bill was into an Elk River chrome Chunker Chinook. What a way to start the day!

Big Fish make for Big Battles

Kelly & Bill had a day to remember landing the famed Elk River Hawgs they had only previously heard about. The short-lived rise in the river gave way to a couple days of hot fishing before the river dropped back to low and clear conditions. I just hope they had a good supply of Ben Gay!

This happy angler enjoyed some powerful runs from a large Silver Salmon that responded to the flash of a spinner.

You never know exactly what might latch on. Jamie tied into a big bruiser of a Coho while trolling the “Plug-Cut” in mid-October with RFGS on the Lower Siuslaw

Exciting Fall Chinook Fishing Peaks on Numerous Systems

Ed and Cliff had quite a day recently while drifting the very scenic Siletz River. Both bait and plugs seemed to produced equally well. The intermittent downpours didn’t phase the boys at all and in fact, Cliff maintained that his stylish pink rainpants somehow influenced their great success.

Nice Fish! (Just hope it’s not bigger than mine)

As Matt congratulates his brother Thomas on an excellent catch, there could just possibly be a touch of unspoken concern that Thomas’ fish may outweigh Matt’s beauty by a pound or two. In the end however, all was good as the boys went 4 for 5 on Chinook while enjoying some late afternoon fall sunshine on Wednesday’s drift down the Siuslaw.
