Another Umpqua Smallmouth Bass succumbs to the prowess of Jiggy Jim Lindly

I had the pleasure last Tuesday to guide brothers Tom & Jim Lindly on a Smallmouth Bass trip on the main stem of the Umpqua River near Elkton, Oregon.  It was a welcome change from the steelhead guiding I have been most recently involved in.  The weather was perfect and the 80 degree water  rendered an excellent afternoon bite as well as a good excuse for a swim.  The bite was definitely slow at the get go, but after some solar exposure, conditions came together for a fun afternoon with lots of scappy smallies.  Tom, an accomplished crankbait specialist, worked the tops of the shevles and the shallows with good results.  He stuck with this method through most of the day, experiencing continued improvement as the water warmed up.  Late in the day he even sized up with some deeper running crankbaits that produced several of his larger fish.  His brother favored the plastics, drifting, jigging and retrieving worm and grub imitations in the darker colors.  Jim's bigger fish also came off the bottom of the deeper holes using a jigging/drift combination.  It was great fun watching the guys use diffent techniques, both with favorable results.
