Wes Connected with Numerous Late-Run Spring Chinook Over the past 10 days we have had great luck finding some quality Spring Chinook, mostly of hatchery origin. To our delight, all the fish retained had nice orange meat. Back-bouncing baits, running baits behind divers, and even plugs all produced strikes. Wes spent 2 days of his vacation successfully chasing after big fish and then also did a day of fly fishing for Rainbow Trout on the very scenic upper McKenzie River with his son Wes Jr. and grandson Taylor also joining in on the fun. It was great to watch all three [...]
We had a very pleasant drift yesterday on the Middle Fork Willamette with several chances on feisty Summer Steelhead. Despite a forecast for very hot temperatures, a cool breeze off the water kept us really comfortable throughout the float. It's always a pleasant surprise when an apparent trout bite turns into an acrobatic tail-walking, summersaulting, line-burning Steelhead!
Dwight and Milton got to take home some quality McKenzie River tablefare.
In addition to some excellent fly fishing for trout, we now have Spring Chinook Salmon & feisty Summer Steelhead all producing some fun summer fishing action on the McKenzie. This past week, Julie and her Dad celebrated a combination Birthday-Fathers Day with a salmon/steelhead combo trip. In addition to Julie's big steelhead, they landed several nice Springers as well. Suffice to say, their Father's Day BBQ was plentiful!
Gary was happy to land a feisty Summer Steelhead & a fresh Spring Chinook on Tuesday's trip down the McKenzie River. Action should continue to heat up in the weeks to come through June & July. On yesterday's trout trip we landed 21 Rainbows on about 35 takes on wets & dries. Great trout fishing should also continue through the summer.
In addition to our local salmon trips, as the summer progresses we have some really fun fishing alternatives for Bass and Trout. The trout trips offer a great opportunity for novice fly-fishers to gain the confidence that flies really do work! It is not uncommon for a first-timer to hook as many as 30 fish of which he or she might land 15-20. It's great fun!
With over 40,000 Springers in the Upper Willamette System, our local salmon fishing should peak through the month of June and hopefully endure beyond. A glimpse of what can happen when you bring a can of magic MOJO!
A Memorial Day Float produced some Spring Chinook action for us. We were pleasantly surprised with an unexpected lack of boats out on the holiday. It made for a very peaceful and scenic outing.
