A mix of wild and hatchery-raised Rainbow Trout are now available on the McKenzie River.  Both the upper and lower river are producing catches.  McKenzie trout respond readily to flies which provide great fun for both novice and expert fly fishers.

RT enjoyed a magical 2 days on the McKenzie River in late September. We did several different runs on the upper river targeting trout on the fly. Ron did an exceptional job of placing the flies right where fish live and the fish were indeed quite responsive. Both days he landed a bunch of scrappy trout, both wild and of hatchery origin. We used a combination of dries and nymphs with the wets working better in the morning and with the dries proving more productive in the afternoon. On the second morning we decided to mix the plan up […]

As usual, we’ve been enjoying some very fun trips on the upper McKenzie River fly fishing for trout. River traffic is way down, in fact, next to nothing with students back in school. Cooler temperatures and colors in the fall leaves all contribute to that special time of year when the afternoon trout action can be phenomenal!

Fred & Rider scored big on Upper McKenzie Trout on Friday. Fred’s concern that the full moon would kill the bite proved unwarranted. Instead the guys took top spot on our McKenzie trout tips of 2016 as they landed over 50 fish! Definitely one for the books.

The gorgeous Upper McKenzie River distinguishes itself from the lower reaches as faster, shallower, and with more gradient. Boaters need to pay closer attention while plying the waters and fishermen need greater accuracy, especially when picking apart the tiny pockets located within a rapid and the micro flats or steps that comprise a given gradient. With a little direction from his guide, Bosey did a great job of locating the miniscule fish-holding buckets, often no larger than a standard bathtub, as he deftly worked his flies down through swift and choppy gradients. More often than not, the fly caster […]

Day 2 of Bo’s McKenzie adventure involved a long run on the Lower River. Casting different combinations of a dry with a dropper nymph, the Boser put on quite a trout clinic as the fish took both wet and dries. While Bo landed at least 17 fish, we won’t mention how many how many others got away…..

McKenzie River Fun

We ran 3 very fun & productive trips this past week with Bosey G. The excitement started with an impromptu afternoon-evening drift mostly swinging flies for steelhead in the chop and tail-outs. We ended up with a surprise late season salmon in the very last tailout. What a great fight it gave us on steelhead gear! Given the late calendar date, we were blown away by the wonderful condition of this hatchery “Springer” caught on August 27 and which cut a beautiful orange colored meat and barbequed up like a May 1st Spring Chinook. Yum, Yum! The following 2 […]

We got a nice Steelhead & a Salmon in the morning and then switched gears for Rainbow Trout in the afternoon. 6 yr old Taylor put on a bit of a Trout Clinic in the afternoon showing all us old-timers just how it’s done.

In addition to some excellent fly fishing for trout, we now have Spring Chinook Salmon & feisty Summer Steelhead all producing some fun summer fishing action on the McKenzie. This past week, Julie and her Dad celebrated a combination Birthday-Fathers Day with a salmon/steelhead combo trip. In addition to Julie’s big steelhead, they landed several nice Springers as well. Suffice to say, their Father’s Day BBQ was plentiful!
