Wes Connected with Numerous Late-Run Spring Chinook Over the past 10 days we have had great luck finding some quality Spring Chinook, mostly of  hatchery origin.  To our delight, all the fish retained had nice orange meat.  Back-bouncing baits, running baits behind divers, and even plugs all produced strikes.  Wes spent 2 days of his vacation successfully chasing after big fish and then also did a day of fly fishing for Rainbow Trout on the very scenic upper McKenzie River with his son Wes Jr. and grandson Taylor also joining in on the fun.  It was great to watch all three [...]

RT enjoyed a magical 2 days on the McKenzie River in late September. We did several different runs on the upper river targeting trout on the fly. Ron did an exceptional job of placing the flies right where fish live and the fish were indeed quite responsive. Both days he landed a bunch of scrappy trout, both wild and of hatchery origin. We used a combination of dries and nymphs with the wets working better in the morning and with the dries proving more productive in the afternoon. On the second morning we decided to mix the plan up [...]

We ran 3 very fun & productive trips this past week with Bosey G. The excitement started with an impromptu afternoon-evening drift mostly swinging flies for steelhead in the chop and tail-outs. We ended up with a surprise late season salmon in the very last tailout. What a great fight it gave us on steelhead gear! Given the late calendar date, we were blown away by the wonderful condition of this hatchery "Springer" caught on August 27 and which cut a beautiful orange colored meat and barbequed up like a May 1st Spring Chinook. Yum, Yum! The following 2 [...]

We got a nice Steelhead & a Salmon in the morning and then switched gears for Rainbow Trout in the afternoon. 6 yr old Taylor put on a bit of a Trout Clinic in the afternoon showing all us old-timers just how it's done.

After shaking off the loss of a challenging summer steelhead which won the battle by shaking the hook at the last minute, Gary was very pleased to make good on his first back-bounced Willamette Springer.

Wes had an absolute blast and brought home not only a lot of stories & memories, but quite a few fillets as we went 12 for 14 over 3 days of salmon and steelhead fishing on his mid-July 2016 McKenzie River Vacation. Truth be told, we spent 1 afternoon with Wes's 6 year old grandson Taylor who put on a clinic of his own catching McKenzie Rainbows. No doubt Mom & his sisters got an earful once Taylor got home.

Long time friend and frequent guest of RFGS, Chrissy D. recently lost a hard-fought battle with cancer. Her love of life, people, and fishing lives on in our hearts and memories along with that unforgettable infectious laugh and smile. Chrissy is holding a massive McKenzie River Steelhead, one of many toads she put in the boat over our years fishing together.
